As he runs for U.S. Senate, Republican Alan Keyes has all but ignored the typical political playbook for candidates running statewide in Illinois: Don't paint the issues as a matter of black and white, since the many independents you need to woo frequently see oceans of gray. And whatever you do, don't bring up the potentially offensive issues of guns, abortion and gays (unless you're a Democrat who can use the abortion topic to bash your foe as too conservative, of course.)
