Nov. 11--WASHINGTON -- News of a potentially devastating fungus discovered on soybean plants in Louisiana caused a wave of nervousness across the Midwest on Wednesday as farmers worried that that it would eventually spread north and wreak havoc on their soybean crop.
Officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday said that they had found soybean rust -- which has cost Brazil billions of dollars in lost yields -- on two plots of land on research farms operated by Louisiana State University near Baton Rouge.
