ORLANDO, Fla. _ Jermaine Phillips had been due to become a restricted free agent next March, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had no intention of letting their third-year free safety see that day.
Phillips agreed this week to a contract extension that will lock up the former Georgia standout through the 2008 season. The four-year deal is worth an estimated $9 million and will include guaranteed bonus payments in excess of $2 million.
"It's definitely better than what I got the first time," said Phillips, who, as a fifth-round draft pick in 2002, signed a minimum-salary deal in 2002 and received a modest bonus.
