In this issue, we commemorate the sad departure of Vittore Branca and Luigi Monga, two beloved scholars and colleagues who have, in different ways, contributed to the dissemination of Italian literature and culture. I was fortunate enough to have met and appreciated both. I met Branca in the best of circumstances for a graduate student: when, in the fall 1989, he was visiting professor at Columbia University, where I was finishing my PhD. He taught a course on one of his best scholarly specialties: literature and philology. He discussed methodological issues on textual analysis and critical editions, exemplifying with Boccaccio, Poliziano, Alfieri, and Montale. ...
