CHICAGO _ Bret Bielema's first foray into the nation's sports pages wasn't exactly the stuff of legends.
It was September 1992, and Bielema had transformed himself from a 190-pound walk-on to a 265-pound co-captain anchoring Iowa's defensive line. But that wasn't the story. No, it stemmed from an incident moments after Iowa had beaten archrival Iowa State for the 10th consecutive time.
Bielema, angry after seeing some Cyclones give his team the one-arm salute, shook the hand of Iowa State coach Jim Walden at midfield and told him, "Coach, you've been a real (expletive) the last five years. I've enjoyed beating you."
