For the past several years, Safeco Field has steadily climbed the ranks of eco-friendly ballparks. A plastic bottle recycling campaign, promoted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, provided the initial boost.
During the program's first year (2005), Safeco Field recycled 1.3 million pounds of plastic. For their efforts, the Seattle Mariners received the "Recycler of the Year" award from the Washington State Recycling Association. The program is improving, too. Last season, Safeco Field recycled almost 97 percent of its plastic cups and bottles, a 14 percent increase from the 2005 figures.
