"Pecan" is an American Indian word of Algonquin origin that was used to describe "all nuts requiring a stone to crack."
Pecans are the most valuable native nut-producing species in North America, with 80 percent of the world's pecan production coming from the United States. The majority of those grow in Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, California and Kansas.
