Nov. 16--MarketWatch, a San Francisco company that provides online financial news and analysis, will be acquired by Dow Jones, parent company of the Wall Street Journal and WSJ.com, for $519 million, both companies announced.
Dow Jones will gain two MarketWatch-run Web sites -- CBSMarketWatch.com and BigCharts.com -- that have about 5.8 million unique visitors a month combined, according to MarketWatch. Dow Jones beat out other companies -- reportedly the New York Times, Yahoo and Viacom -- that also bid to acquire MarketWatch. (CBS, whose parent company is Viacom, already owned a 25 percent stake in MarketWatch.)
