November 5, 1989--The first memorial to the Civil Rights Movement in the U.S. was dedicated at a ceremony in Montgomery, AL, on this day. Commissioned by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the $700,000, 9-foot granite memorial, which sits in front of the center, is composed of the same material as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. A thin sheet of water flows over the memorial to reflect the face of the viewer. Inscribed with the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. "... Until Justice Rolls Down Like Waters And Righteousness Like A Mighty Stream," the memorial includes a black granite table with the names of those who died during the Civil Rights Movement ...
