President Vladimir Putin on 15 November seconded a statement the previous day by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said that Russia is prepared to hand over to Japan the two southernmost main Kurile Islands in accordance with a 1956 bilateral agreement, Russian media reported. Putin is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on the sidelines of the 20-21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) organization summit in Santiago, Chile.
