Success has bred the need for change, for its ruling party as much as for Japan
VOTERS are usually wise to regard politicians' pronouncements about the need for change with some suspicion; especially Japanese voters; and especially when the utterances come from a member of the party that has held office in their country for 37 years. Now listen to Ichiro Ozawa, a leading member of the governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who recently declared that "Japanese people . . . have not really got out of their old ways of living and thinking.
