Many conifers have characteristic extractive compounds that give distinctive characteristics to the wood. When such compounds are under genetic control these can be used as taxonomic markers just as well as "good" morphological characters. This forms the basis of chemotaxonomy (also known as biochemical systematics). The advantage of the chemical approach is that one deals with discrete chemical structures that can be quantified. Often, groups of biosynthetically related compounds are involved which can provide information that is not available from morphological data.
