Stopping distances recommended in The Highway Code have remained the same for nearly 60 years. The Journal tested the stopping distances of two cars ( a modern Ford Focus and a 1970-made Morris Minor.
Published in 1946, the third edition of the Highway Code was notable for one major innovation ( the first table of vehicle stopping distances.
