Chess whiz John Bartholomew, 18, an Eagan High School senior, is a couple of good tournament performances away from attaining the rank of international master. That rank is a step below the status of grandmaster. Bartholomew could attain the international master title after two major chess tournaments this spring, one of which will be held in Minneapolis.
When did you start playing chess?
I started when I was 7, I think. Just like with my friends. But I didn't really play in a tournament until like fourth grade.
