Nov. 19--DEBT CAN BE A VERY STUBBORN THING: QUESTION: Last year I incurred a credit card debt of $46,000. When I could no longer pay the bill, the company settled with me for $30,000. Recently I returned some items totaling over $200, but have been waiting since July for a credit on my account. I was told any returns processed on this card are put toward the $16,000 difference in the settled amount. I was speechless! Is this legal? When they settled my account, no one told me about this situation. Please advise what my alternatives are.
