THIS IS A BIG election year in many Western countries, but nowhere else will the upheaval in Eastern Europe lead to such direct domestic consequences as in Israel. The massive influx of "Soviet" Jews has suddenly increased the Israeli body politic by 10 per cent, with unpredictable consequences for Israeli democracy. The only sure thing is that it will be one of the meanest elections in Israel's history.
