This column is written before the November 2 election, but will be published after it. During the lengthy presidential campaign, the candidates and the mass media concentrated primarily on the Iraq insurgency at the expense of issues such as the economy, health, education and other domestic concerns.
Whether this was the intent of the Bush campaign or whether events propelled the Iraqi conflagration to the forefront has become irrelevant. The Iraq conflict is uppermost in the minds of most Americans. So let us confront that issue.
