Nov. 19--LAKELAND, Fla. -- State citrus industry leaders are considering fundamental changes to the law governing the Florida Department of Citrus in the event the department loses the legal battle over its taxing authority.
"Clearly within a year or less, we could have a Florida Supreme Court ruling against the box tax, and that's the end of the road," said state Sen. J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, on Thursday.
Alexander said he feared the Supreme Court likely would rule while the Legislature was out of session, thus giving lawmakers no opportunity to amend the law and keep the Citrus Department in business.
