A new "virtual ICU" is opening at Inova Alexandria Hospital in southeastern Virginia. Digital cameras, microphones and special software will link patients and their caregivers to a team of intensive-care specialists. Inova Health System's plan is to bring the "virtual ICU" to approximately 200 critically ill patients in the ICUs of its four hospitals in the next year. The systems appear to be a growing trend in hospitals, and may be an answer to improving care in intensive-care units with the severe shortage of intensive-care medical specialists.
