2004 NOV 22 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- Public health specialists with the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services in California reported on two outbreaks of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSRA) in neonatal intensive care units.
Between January and March 2004 Dawn Terashita, MD, MPH, and colleagues investigated two MRSA outbreaks in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in which the initial case was believed to have contracted MRSA through mother's breast milk.
The physicians stated, "Because of the vulnerable nature of the NICU population, we propose that hospitals consider culturing breast milk fed to neonates in the NICU to ...
