Demographic shifts and a new university raise hopes of diversifying the economy.
The date was October 30. The place: Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Naples. Inside one of the ballrooms, nearly 400 business people from Southwest Florida were listening to outsiders -- a New Yorker, an Alabaman and a Bostonian -- offer their views of Southwest Florida and what business leaders could do to shape its economic future.
Recession was clearly on the minds of the attendees, but many also were focused on questions about their region's long-term economic future: What can we be when we grow up, and how do we get there?
