SEVERAL RECENT STUDIES conducted in Asia, Europe, and the United States have shown that acute exposures to current ambient levels of air pollution are associated with adverse health status, including mortality, (1-5) hospital admissions resulting from asthma, (6-8) severity of preexisting chronic illnesses, (9,10) low birth weights, (11-13) and school absences.
