INTRODUCTION

Thermosets are commonly used as matrix materials for filled composites. In such applications, filler material is introduced to impart enhanced mechanical properties. It has been well established, however, that the compressive strength of such composites is dominated by the mechanical properties of the matrix material. For fiber-reinforced composites, failure occurs through a microbuckling mechanism dictated by the shear modulus of the matrix (1, 2).
