Eight tropical cyclones reached tropical storm or hurricane intensity in the Atlantic Ocean basin, breaking the August record of seven cyclones established in 1933 and 1995. Five of those storms made landfall in the Eastern United States, while a sixth--Hurricane Alex--grazed North Carolina's Outer Banks on August 3rd with wind gusts as high as 100 mph. Florida bore the brunt of the tropical activity, enduring landfalls from Tropical Storm Bonnie (near Apalachicola on August 12th) and Category 4 Hurricane Charley (near Ft.
