The University of the Philippines Board of Regents yesterday elected UP-Diliman Chancellor Dr. Emerlinda Roman as the 19th UP president - and the first woman educator to lead the countrys premier state university.

Romans election came a few days after a 6-6 deadlock in the Board deliberations between her and Ambassador Edgardo Espiritu.

Yesterday morning, the Board broke the stalemate by voting 7-5 in favor of Roman.

She will replace UP President Francisco Nemenzo who retires on his 70th birth anniversary on Feb. 8, 2005.
