Unable to penetrate a swarming Maine-Endwell defense, Section 3 Class B girls field hockey champion Vernon-Verona-Sherrill lost 1-0 to the Spartans in a state semifinal contest at P&C Stadium Friday afternoon.
Maine-Endwell (16-2) of Section 4 will play defending state champion Rye High (20-1) for the Class B crown at noon today. Rye beat Amherst 2-0 in the other semifinal at P&C.
Friday's game was a defensive standoff contested mainly in the midfield area with neither team getting many scoring chances. M-E goalie Leah Windover needed to make only one save, while V-V-S' Kelly Snizek was credited with two.
