Students of Asian affairs, historical and contemporary, can hardly afford not to know about the Straits of Malacca. The book under review provides a concentrated examination of the straits' place in the historical and contemporary contexts of the pursuit of and conflict over the economic (trade) and security (maintenance and control) values of the waterways for both the countries immediately adjacent and those distant but linked by commercial, military/strategic, and ideational interests.
