No doubt to their chagrin, opponents of embryonic stem cell experiments have only helped Wisconsin hold the high ground in this promising branch of research. But that edge is eroding fast.
Supported by those who oppose harvesting the cells on moral grounds, President Bush has barred any federal financial support for research involving embryonic stem cell lines created after August 2001. That convoluted compromise left UW-Madison's patent licensing arm in charge of the five best embryonic stem cell lines, bolstering income and support for campus stem cell research.
