For HIPPI and other schemes, HP chip set replaces GaAs parts
PALO ALTO, CA--To create high-speed data links between mainframe computers or workstations, designers usually have two expensive choices: trying to use complex gallium arsenide (GaAs) components or building their own discrete subsystems. The silicon-based HDMP-1000 "Gigabit-Link" chip set from Hewlett-Packard Co offers an alternative that can serially transmit data up to 1.5 Gbps over versions of the High-Performance Parallel Interface (HIPPI) bus, the IEEE Scalable Coherent Interface-Fiber Interface (SCIFI), or in other point-to-point applications.
