NEW YORK -- Miami-area retailers, hit by the area's biggest storm in decades Monday, spent much of the day trying to find out how much damage had been done and sounding thankful that it wasn't worse.
As Hurricane Andrew spun through the state before heading toward the Gulf of Mexico, retailers in South Florida, some of whom had been closed since Sunday, were in the early stages of toting up their losses. Virtually all major stores began closing Sunday and remained closed Monday. Most are expected to reopen today.
