WASHINGTON _ Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley on Wednesday called for a federal probe into allegations that U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials used anonymous calls in an attempt to discredit an agency whistleblower.

The whistleblower, FDA drug safety expert David Graham, had testified before Grassley's committee that FDA oversight failures contributed to the deaths of as many as 55,000 users of the now-banned arthritis painkiller Vioxx.
