THE history of medicine examines the development, practices, and treatment of disease from ancient times to the present. It was a Greek physician Hippocrates who in the 5th century was the first to use observation rather than divine intervention to prevent and cure medical conditions. While many texts of ancient Greek medicine were lost in the Middle Ages, they would be rediscovered in the 14th and 15th century and would become the authority for Western medical practice into the modern period. In later centuries, medical science would make advances with the discovery of vaccinations for various illnesses, either as an anesthetic, and penicillin as the first antibiotic.
