According to provisions of the 7th Amendment to the Cosmetics Directive, requirements for the new Period After Opening (PAO) symbol will become effective on March 11, 2005 for all products sold in the European Union. On the surface, the law almost appears to provide a simple identity for consumer usage and perhaps a restatement or an extension of the current requirement for a "Best Used By" date, but unfortunately, it is considerably more complex and scientifically challenging.
