Nov. 25--Toll collectors and other unionized workers on the Pennsylvania Turnpike went on strike for the first time in the road's 64-year history yesterday, leaving drivers with a free ride on the heavily traveled day before Thanksgiving.

The no-toll holiday was to have ended at 12:01 a.m. today when, turnpike officials said, flat-rate cash tolls of $2 for cars and $15 for trucks would go into effect for the duration of the strike. Toll tickets will not be issued.

The turnpike might lift tolls again Sunday to ease holiday traffic, officials said.
