In possibly the wildest championship game in the 12 years of the NYSPHSAA football tournament, unbeaten, No. 1 state-ranked Maine-Endwell (12-0) scored the winning touchdown Friday with 19 seconds remaining to defeat Wallkill 39-36 for the state Class A title in the Carrier Dome.
On the deciding score, which gave the Spartans their first-ever state football title, hobbled 6-foot-3 senior quarterback Shane Connolly fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Fitchpatrick to finish the decisive nine-play, 68-yard drive.
