NOBODY knows,' the heir to the throne once famously grumbled, 'what utter hell it is to be Prince of Wales.' Despite the extraordinary self-pity of this remark, it now seems there was one person who saw past the palatial lifestyle, the vast entourage, the sycophantic courtiers and the cushioned existence, to the loneliness and sadness that Charles apparently feels.
That person was the poet and philosopher Kathleen Raine.
Earlier this week, the Mail revealed the astonishing depth of the friendship between the Prince and Dr Raine, a woman 40 years his senior.
