TOM Wolfe is an elegant dandy who happens to be heckuva handy with a typewriter.
Wearing trademark Slick White Suit, he produced slick, white-hot prose working the beat as a journalist in 1960s America. An intriguing blend of Colonel Sanders and Jeremy Paxman, he revitalised the newspaperman's craft as part of a group of scribblers known as the New Journalists.
Stylistically more adventurous than previous hacks, the group trumpeted indepth research and increasingly subjective copy.
