After a two-year buildup of their foreign exchange desks, banks' interest in hiring FX traders and technologists spiked this fall, especially for proprietary desks-in part because the currency business remains so attractive relative to the flat equities and corporate finance markets. Actual hiring seems to have slowed a bit at the moment, due to the usual hunkering down for the bonus season, but recruiters expect it to resume with vigor early next year after bonuses are paid.

"There's a lot of demand right now-and a lot of movement-as many banks are looking to retool their whole FX business," said Michael Karp, head of the Options Group.
