NEW YORK -- The success of Procter & Gamble Co.'s (P&G's) Prilosec OTC not only helped make the stomach-relief product the fastest-selling item in drug stores over the past year but was the main reason an otherwise lackluster antacids category suddenly grew by more than a third during that period.

As its drug store sales approached $133 million for the year, volume in the antacids category soared 33.2% after several years of 2% to 3% annual gains.
