UK firm Oneida TheraDiagnostics says it has launched a testing service using two new blood tests - FibroTest and ActiTest - that enables doctors to assess the extent of liver disease in hepatitis C virus infected patients without the need for a liver biopsy.

Around 200,000 people in the UK are thought to be chronically infected with the virus and, if left untreated, around one in five will develop cirrhosis of the liver; HCV is now the leading reason for liver transplantation in the UK, noted the firm.
