Almost 95% of wine grapes in the San Joaquin Valley have already been contracted, said Barry Bedwell, president of Allied Grape Growers, Fresno, in the current edition of "Crush," newsletter of California Association of Winegrape Growers (CAWG).
"Given the development of a normal (California) crop, the remaining unsold tonnages of both black (red) and white grapes, appear to be in a situation where remaining demand will exceed supply.
"Much of the remaining buying in the Central Valley will now revolve chiefly around Thompsons, where the availability of this variety for crush will depend on prices high enough so growers will not make raisins."
