Years ago at an East Coast discussion between the Society of Architectural Historians and Oxford University Press, the Colorado volume of the Buildings of the United States Series came up.
"Is there anything out there?" someone said. "Couldn't Colorado, Wyoming and Montana all be covered in one book?"
At the same meetings, scholars were arguing that New York, Virginia, California and other states would require two, if not three, volumes to survey their prehistoric, historic and modern architectural wonders.
