It's Saturday morning and I'm meeting percussionist Karl Perazzo for breakfast burritos at Pedro's Mexican Restaurant in San Leandro, a California town that he's lived in for 10 years and that he describes as "The Mayberry of the East Bay." It's where the timbalero-bandleader-producer rests between gigs with his wife Debi, family and friends.
As the timbalero with Santana, Perazzo has learned to adapt to the demands of his high-scale gig. Yet he's maintained his own creative expression through his salsa band (Avance) and his own label, Mona Records.
