When the world recognized that Germany had killed 6 million Jews because of hatred for their race and religion, a guarantee of freedom of religion was placed in the United Nations Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and several other covenants on human rights. The European Court of Human Rights, established in 1953, created a tribunal to which those persecuted because of their faith (or the lack of it) could appeal.
