With the 400th anniversary of the landing of the first English settlers on American soil looming two years away, the Virginia Beach 2007 Steering Committee is trying to get a head start on preparations for a bang-up local celebration.
One of the first orders of business is improving the site of the Cape Henry Cross atop a dune overlooking the Atlantic at Fort Story, said C. Mac Rawls , head of the steering committee.
"If there is sacred ground in Virginia Beach, it's Cape Henry," Rawls told City Council members recently.
The site is about where a landing party of English settlers - employees of the London Company - planted a cross in May of 1607 ...
