He joined the Dayton's department store family in 1985. He stayed on when the Dayton's name was chucked in favor of Marshall Field's. When Target Corp. decided to jettison its high-end department store altogether and sell out to the May Co., he still hung on.

This year, Santabear celebrates his 20th anniversary with the store some still call Dayton's.

The plush 18-inch white bear, dressed in a new outfit each year, was the answer to what could have been a less than stellar holiday retail season in 1985 - a year that was days shorter than usual between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
