Theophylline is one of the mainstays of asthma treatment. When used properly. it's safe and effective. However. it has a narrow margin of safety and many things can affect the blood levels. If the blood levels get too high. serious side effects occur; if the levels fall too low. the drug loses it effectiveness.
The greater the blood level is over the therapeutic range ( 10-20 mfiligrams/liter of blood). the more serious the potential side effects. With minor elevations above therapeutic. the side effects include headaches. dizziness. nervousness. insomnia. loss of appetite. nausea. vomiting. and abdominal pain.
