Dec. 1--West Virginia receives more federal highway money per person than any other state in the South, according to a new report by the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments.

Despite the spending, Mountain State roads remain among the deadliest in the nation. West Virginia ranked third in the South and tied for fourth in the nation in the number of people who died in car accidents for every 100 million miles driven. Only Montana, Mississippi and South Carolina ranked worse in 2002.
