Dec. 2--Iraq, once the largest importer of U.S. rice, has "tendered a bid" for 100,000 metric tons, the most it has considered buying from the United States since a trade embargo eliminated the market in 1989.
The rice is to be shipped in January.
"This is an opening. If they continue to buy, it could be extremely significant to the rice market," said J.P. Gaines, publisher of Rice Market Letter in Madisonville, La.
Unconfirmed reports say the Iraqi Grain Board is expected to seek 250,000 tons over the next few months.
