What is "American Style"?

It's also a hefty coffee-table book compiled by Kelly Killoren Bensimon, with more than 200 photos that trace how America's look has evolved, from 19th-century style icon Dolley Madison's years as first lady to Isaac Mizrahi's partnership with Target. Harold Koda, the curator of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, writes the introduction for "American Style" (Assouline, $50).
